The figures represent a 34% year-on-year increase in tech employment, driven by growth in software development, fintech, e-commerce, and cloud services.

Johannesburg’s Sandton district has emerged as the continent’s leading financial technology hub, while Cape Town’s Woodstock and Salt River areas — collectively dubbed the “Silicon Cape” — house over 600 technology startups, many of which are attracting significant international venture capital.

What Is Fuelling the Growth?

Several factors are converging to make South Africa an attractive destination for tech investment. The rollout of high-speed fibre by providers like Vumatel, OpenServe, and Frogfoot has brought affordable gigabit internet to millions of homes and businesses. MTN’s launch of a standalone 5G network in Johannesburg has further accelerated the infrastructure upgrade.

“We are seeing a generation of young South Africans who are as competitive as any developer in the world. The global market is finally taking notice.” — Nomvula Dube, CEO, SA Digital Economy Council

Government incentives have also played a role. The Special Economic Zone (SEZ) programme now includes a dedicated digital economy zone in the Eastern Cape, offering tax incentives for companies that locate tech operations there and hire locally.

Challenges That Remain

Despite the growth, the sector faces a significant skills shortage. An estimated 70,000 developer positions remain unfilled nationally, and the pipeline of qualified graduates from universities and coding bootcamps is not yet keeping pace with demand. Companies like Microsoft, Google, and Amazon — all of which have significant operations in South Africa — have launched local training programmes to help address the gap.

New data from the Department of Trade and Industry shows South Africa’s digital economy is growing faster than any other sector, with Johannesburg and Cape Town emerging as continental tech hubs.
