The Polokwane Magistrates’ Court has heard that attorney Charlotte Tibana allegedly told an investigating officer that she would take her own life if she were released on bail.
Tibana and her husband, Tshwane Metro Police Department officer Peter “Gagash” Nonyane, are facing fraud and money-laundering charges relating to alleged financial losses involving deceased estates.
The State alleges that Tibana benefited from funds allegedly transferred from estate accounts, with some of the money reportedly used to acquire assets.
During the bail proceedings, State witness Constable Phuthisho Thobejane opposed Tibana’s release, citing concerns that she could potentially interfere with the investigation if granted bail.
The alleged statement regarding self-harm was presented as part of the evidence before the court and has not been independently established as fact.
Tibana and Nonyane have not been convicted of the charges and remain presumed innocent until proven guilty.
