The debate surrounding Wicknell Chivayo’s alleged South African investigation has taken another turn.

A letter from the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, dated 24 August 2026, states that there was no DPCI investigation being conducted against Chivayo or Intratrek Holdings concerning allegations of money laundering.

The wording is significant because it directly addresses an allegation that has circulated extensively in Zimbabwean and South African public discourse.

The Hawks had already publicly denied having an active case involving Chivayo in July. News24 later apologised after incorrectly reporting that he was under investigation by the Hawks and the Financial Intelligence Centre.

The DPCI letter does include an important caveat: its confirmation is based on information currently available and does not prevent the Directorate from investigating a matter in future if circumstances warrant it.

But that is precisely why accuracy matters.

As at 24 August 2026, the DPCI’s written position is that there was no such investigation.

For those who spent months presenting the alleged probe as fact, the story has now come full circle.

The question is no longer “Is Chivayo under investigation?”

It is: “Why was the public repeatedly told that he was?”
